John
Evans
(1867-1958)
was a
reformer
best
known
for his
political
activities
on
behalf
of
western
Canadian
farmers
. He was
born
in
Rhayader
,
Radnorshire
,
Wales
on
25
June
1867
to
John
and
Mary
(Wylde)
Evans
. He
emigrated
to
Canada
in
1890
,
working
for his
first
two
years
at the
Polson
Iron
Works
at
Owen
Sound
,
Ontario
, then
taking
up
a
farm
in the
Saskatoon
area
.
Evans
held
executive
positions
in a
number
of
farmers
'
organizations
:
President
of the
Saskatchewan
Farmers
'
Mutual
Fire
Insurance
Co.
,
Director
of the
Saskatchewan
Co-operative
Elevator
Co.
,
Executive
Director
of the
Saskatchewan
Grain
Growers
'
Association
, and
President
of the
United
Farmers
of
Canada
(Saskatchewan
Section)
. He also
entered
politics
. He was
first
elected
to the
House
of
Commons
in
1921
as a
Progressive
MP
for the
Saskatoon
riding
.
Evans
was
re-elected
in
1925
to
represent
Rosetown
.
Upon
the
breakup
of the
Progressive
Party
in the
late
1920s
, he
joined
the
CCF
. He was
never
reelected
,
despite
his
commitment
to
fighting
for the
poor
and
oppressed
.
